Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse
Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA)
Most people still don’t understand how common child sexual abuse really is — or how many different forms it takes.
Child sexual abuse happens:
• in family homes
• in schools and educational settings
• in sports and leisure clubs
• in faith and religious environments
• in care and medical settings
• between peers
• and increasingly, online
It isn’t “a rare tragedy”.
It isn’t “someone else’s problem”.
It is everywhere — and it is overwhelmingly hidden.
Government estimates suggest that around 500,000 children experience some form of sexual abuse every single year.
When you break that down, that’s roughly:
👉 At least 1 child in every classroom of 30 — each year.
But that’s just the annual figure.
When we look at lifetime prevalence, the picture becomes even clearer:
👉 Around 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before they turn 16.
That is approximately:
👉 3 children in every class of 30.
If you looked at a row of 30 children and knew that 1–3 of them had been, or will be, abused… would you still think this issue is “too uncomfortable to talk about”?
If it was your child — or your grandchild — what would you expect the adults around them to do?
Child sexual abuse is preventable.
But only if we See it. Say it. Sort it.
