Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse
Independent Inquiry Child Sexual Abuse (IICSA) Recommendation 4 Child Protection Public Awareness Campaign
The festive season doesn’t feel safe for every child.
Boxing Day is often seen as “the calm after Christmas” — but for children living with abuse, risk can remain high or even increase.
Homes are still crowded, routines are disrupted, schools remain closed, and there are fewer safeguarding eyes.
Major sporting events and increased alcohol use don’t cause abuse — but where abuse already exists, they can intensify risk.
Emotions run high, inhibition drops, and children are left with fewer places to retreat or be seen.
IICSA showed that risk increases when routine oversight disappears.
The festive period creates exactly those conditions.
Abuse doesn’t pause for Christmas.
And it doesn’t end on Boxing Day.
